Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - STEM

Digital Technologies, Design and Science

Our STEM curriculum integrates Technologies and Science to support students in becoming confident, creative and critical thinkers who can design solutions and understand the world around them. Students learn to design, create, use and evaluate technologies while also exploring scientific concepts that explain how and why things work.

Students develop a strong understanding of Design, Digital Technologies and Science, building the skills needed to solve problems, think critically and respond to current and future needs. They also make informed decisions about technology use, considering ethical factors such as sustainability and environmental impact.

At Iramoo Primary School, students from Prep to Year 6 engage in rich learning experiences that help them become independent, responsible and capable learners across STEM.

Design
Students use design thinking to investigate, generate and evaluate solutions. They plan and manage projects, explore materials and processes, and consider how technologies impact people, communities and the environment.

Digital Technologies
Students apply computational, design and systems thinking to develop digital solutions. They build skills in coding, working with data, creating digital content and understanding how digital systems meet user needs.

Science
Students develop curiosity about the natural world through observation, questioning and investigation. They explore topics such as living things, materials, forces, Earth and space, and environmental change. Students learn to identify patterns, make predictions, collect and represent data, and communicate their findings using scientific vocabulary. This supports informed, evidence-based thinking about real-world issues.

Learning Progression

  • Prep – Year 2: Explore technologies and science through observation, simple solutions and basic algorithms.
  • Year 3 – Year 4: Design solutions, investigate scientific concepts and work with data and simple algorithms.
  • Year 5 – Year 6: Collaboratively design and evaluate solutions, analyse data, conduct investigations and develop more complex algorithms.

Through hands-on STEM experiences, students build creativity, problem-solving skills and confidence.
